The Chipmunks Dance Trend: Song, Moves and Timeline

What the Chipmunks Dance trend on TikTok is, the mashup song behind it, every move with its timing, and a dated timeline of how it spread.

Last updated: 2026-11-03

The short answer

The Chipmunks Dance is a TikTok trio dance from fall 2026: three people stand still, burst out on the beat at 2.35 seconds, take turns up close to the phone and rush the camera, in one 25-second take set to a high-pitched “You Spin Me Round” mashup. Searches for the Chipmunks Dance trend started rising on October 20, 2026.

What is the Chipmunks Dance?

The Chipmunks Dance, which TikTok calls the Alvin and the Chipmunks dance, is a 2026 TikTok trend: three people perform the same routine side by side, in one take, in front of a phone that doesn’t move. Friends, sisters and college dance teams post it under #chipmunksdance.

There is no single original video, and the sound is a user upload: its original post is captioned “You spin me round x big and chunky”. The voice is a sped-up “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)”, the 1984 Dead or Alive single, most likely in The Chipmunks’ 2009 cover. More on the Chipmunks Dance song page.

What people copy: the moves, second by second

Every copy uses the same stretch of the sound from its start, at 130.7 beats per minute, and every move lands on a beat. Timings from five top posts, give or take a second:

SecondsWhat happens
0–2.35Three in a row, still, facing the phone
2.35The burst on the 6th beat: arms up, a spin, little jumps
4.2–8.0The lead at the front, back to the camera, hands behind the head, hips shaking
9.2The second dancer comes up close to the phone
11.0The third dancer comes up close
13.3–17.3The lead again, facing the camera: an arm thrown up, then a low crouch
17.5The row forms again
18.4Everyone spins, hair flying
19.5–23.2Side by side, small matching hand moves
23.6–25All three rush the phone until their faces fill the frame

It runs in 8-beat phrases of about 3.7 seconds, the easiest blocks to learn it in. Places change from post to post, and outfits are optional: only one of the four biggest posts dresses in character colors.

Also called

Most searches say “chipmunks dance”: about 55% of five spellings compared in Google Trends over the 30 days to November 3, 2026. The others:

  • “alvin and the chipmunks dance” (about 25%): how people describe it out loud.
  • “chipmunk dance” (about 11%): the singular.
  • “chipmunks dance trend” (about 7%): the search this site is named after.
  • “chipmunks dance ai” (about 2%): people making one with AI.
  • “chipettes dance”: three girls, after the films’ girl trio.
  • “you spin me round dance”: after the song.
  • “3 person dance”: from the #3persondance tag. TikTok search also shows misspellings such as “chipminks dance”.

Two look-alikes are different things: AI cartoon chipmunks dancing, and the ChatGPT photo trend that turns you into a 3D chipmunk character. This site makes neither. It makes the trio dance with your own faces.

Why it works

  • It reads in a second. A still row explodes on the beat, and three heads of hair whip around on “spin me right round”.
  • Everyone gets a close-up, so a trio is the natural cast: of the 25 top dance posts, 13 are three friends and 5 are families.
  • People claim a dancer. About 50 comments under the big posts pick which dancer they would be, by color or by character.
  • It’s hard to film. One take, no cuts; captions talk about needing 30 tries.

Is the Chipmunks Dance video real?

Yes. The viral posts are real people: 24 of the 25 most-played dance posts show real people, and none of the five we timed has a cut. AI versions, like the three cats, keep the moves and change who dances. See how the AI generators compare.

How to make your own

Upload three photos on the Chipmunks Dance AI video generator, one adult per photo; the person in the middle leads. You get a 25-second 9:16 MP4 at 720p with no watermark, usually under 15 minutes, for $9.90 one-time (pricing). Each face is a strong likeness, not a twin.

One group photo isn’t accepted yet, and fewer than three people isn’t sold yet. The site makes no videos of children, no costumes and no cartoon characters. The steps are in how to make a Chipmunks Dance AI video.

What this site is not

Chipmunks Dance Trend is an independent, fan-made tool. It is not affiliated with Bagdasarian Productions, 20th Century Studios, Dead or Alive, will.i.am, TikTok or the creators who started the dance, and it uses no character names, costumes or logos. Your video is our own remake of the Chipmunks Dance, made once with three AI-made dancers: each of your three photos takes one dancer’s place, frame by frame, and no frame of anyone’s TikTok is used.

Questions

What is the Chipmunks Dance trend on TikTok, and what song does it use?

A trio dance: three people stand still, burst out on the beat at 2.35 seconds, take turns up close to the phone and rush the camera, in one 25-second take. The sound mixes a high-pitched “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)” with will.i.am’s “Big and Chunky”; on TikTok it is “original sound - Spotifyremixes_” or “original sound - keiford”.

Who started the Chipmunks Dance trend?

No single creator is credited. College game-day cheer and dance teams started posting it on September 26, 2026, and the first post past 10 million plays came from @pipthechip on October 10, 2026.

Why is it called the Chipmunks Dance?

Because of the voice: the sound is a chipmunk-pitched “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)”, most likely The Chipmunks’ 2009 cover, and the dancers come in threes like the cartoon trio.

Is the Chipmunks Dance from an Alvin and the Chipmunks movie?

No. As of November 3, 2026 we found no evidence that the routine comes from a film or a game. The link is the song: The Chipmunks covered “You Spin Me Round” on the 2009 soundtrack of The Squeakquel, and the TikTok sound most likely uses that cover (not confirmed by ear).

Is the Chipmunks Dance the same as the AI chipmunk character trend?

No. AI videos of cartoon chipmunks dancing, and the ChatGPT photo trend that turns you into a 3D chipmunk character, are different trends. The Chipmunks Dance is three real people doing one routine, and it is the only one this site makes.

How can I create the Chipmunks Dance trend using my own photos?

Upload three photos, one adult per photo. You get a 25-second 9:16 MP4 at 720p of the whole routine with no watermark, usually under 15 minutes, for $9.90 one-time.
